So Long, Mike McCarthy

Well, it finally happened. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has often found himself the target of criticism over the last few years, and this season proved to be the tipping point. The Packers were one of the favourites in the NFC early in the year, with Tony Romo even predicted them to face the Jaguars in the Super Bowl. Now, Jacksonville hasn’t been great either so maybe there’s some sort of Romo Curse, but that’s not the point right now. With the Mike McCarthy era in Green Bay coming to an end, let’s look back on his time in charge of the Packers.

Thankful for Thanksgiving Football

While the guys here at Bench Life are all Canadian, we still take the time to acknowledge American Thanksgiving for one very important reason: a full day of NFL football. It basically becomes an unofficial holiday for all of the NFL fans north of the border anyways, so in honour of our favourite not-a-real-holiday, let’s take a look back at everything that happened over Week 12 in the NFL, including everything from Thanksgiving Day.

The Steelers are just fine without Le’Veon Bell

It always sucks when a game with so much potential turns out to be an absolute dud. A game between the 6-2 Carolina Panthers and 5-2-1 Pittsburgh Steelers looked like it was going to be a competitive matchup. Yeah, that didn’t happen. Even when Thursday Night Football has what looks like a good game, it still ends up sucking. And that’s why Thursday Night Football is a waste of time. 9 times out of 10, you will be disappointed. I guess watching TNF is like the equivalent of being a Jets fan.

Nick Mullens had a perfect NFL debut

If you hadn’t heard of Nick Mullens before last Thursday, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of him by now. The former Southern Miss Golden Eagle made his NFL debut for the San Fransisco 49ers on Thursday night against the Raiders, in a game where Mullens wasn’t given much of a chance. Mullens was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2017 Draft, and had never attempted a pass in an NFL game heading into his first start. While Jimmy G is still the future of the 49ers, Mullens has definitely made a name for himself in his debut.

Taking a moment to appreciate Drew Brees

Monday night was a big one for 39 year-old Drew Brees. The New Orleans Saints quarterback became the NFL’s All-Time Passing Yards leader, surpassing the previous record set by Peyton Manning. Brees set the new mark in the late in the second quarter of the Saints 43-19 win over the Redskins. Brees was able to break the record on a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Quan Smith.

The #MinneapolisMiracle Kept the Vikings Dream Alive

We’re inching closer and closer to the Super Bowl, and the games keep getting better. It all kicked off with the Eagles hosting the Falcons on Saturday afternoon. Without Wentz, nobody really gave Philly much of a chance to move on, but the Eagles embraced their new underdog role this weekend.

The NFC Playoff Race is Just Heating Up

It’s been a while, but we’re back and we’re looking at the last two weeks of NFL action. Also, I’m sorry to Texans fans because I might have jinxed their season with my last article, so it looks like the “Burgess Curse” might be a thing now.

For a while it looked like the Eagles were going to fly away (get it?) in the NFC, but over the last couple weeks we’ve seen that this race might be more competitive than we thought. While Philly has been getting a lot of the attention at 8-1, the Rams, Vikings and Saints are all 7-2, and Cam Newton has the Panthers looking set for another playoff run come January. But after two convincing wins, the Saints are the team grabbing some attention as we near the final stretch of the regular season.
