Why McGregor vs. Mayweather won’t live up to the hype

Before I get into this, I just want to say that I really hope I’m wrong. I hope that when these two finally step in the ring together that we get to see one of the best fights in recent memory. But we were all expecting big things a few years ago when Mayweather took on Manny Pacquiao back in 2015 and look at how that fight turned out.

Rather than watching “The Fight of the Century”, we watched Mayweather basically play duck-duck-goose. So here we are again, with another “Fight of the Century” coming up featuring the best in boxing against the best in the UFC. I may be skeptical about this fight, but only because I’ve seen this play out before.

Mayweather is a very defensive fighter, something that many casual fans find boring. He tends to stay away from his opponent and use jabs keep them away, but whenever they manage to get close he clinches, the ref breaks them up and the cycle repeats itself.

Boxing and MMA are very different. Mayweather has been training to be a boxer since he was a kid and has spent his entire life practicing that one skill. Meanwhile, McGregor has been learning many different fighting techniques in order to compete and dominate mixed martial arts in the UFC. Although he’s been training in boxing recently, he still has to play catch-up to even try to come close to reach the same level as Mayweather’s boxing skills.

I know this sounds like I’m hoping for the fight to suck, but I just feel like I can’t expect an exciting Mayweather fight. Here’s hoping Conor McGregor somehow finds a way to change that.

One thing we can always count on McGregor for is to give the fans and media a lot to talk about leading up to the fight. As always, the trash-talking has been hot out of the gates and continues to get even better.

McGregor is the underdog going into this, but if he does manage to pull off the upset I’m sure we’ll see a post-fight interview that might be able to compete with this one.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Conor McGregor always keeps things interesting. Hopefully he makes this fight interesting on August 26th. I really want to be excited for this, but I’m trying to not set my expectations too high.
