The Jersey Bog Week 4

Week four of the blog and the jerseys haven’t slowed down. The haters must be livid. If you want in, be sure to DM pictures of your favourite jersey to one of the Bench Life Social accounts every Wednesday night.

Jersey of the Week Submissions

Fifth Place
Oliver Setzinger

I’ll be honest. I couldn’t make heads or tails of this jersey. Never heard of the player. Never seen that jersey before. So I had to double back and just straight up ask Ben what the deal was. Here’s his reply:

“Hahaha. Oliver Setzinger, Lausanne (Swiss League). Christmas present never worn it, really don’t know why I have it. Haven’t checked his db in a long time, so not really sure what he’s up to”

A quick Google search shoes that the 37 year-old Setzinger has been playing pro hockey since ’99, significant time in Finland, Austria, Switzerland and one season in the AHL. Anyways, here’s the best Setzinger highlights that Youtube has to offer.

Fourth Place
Steve Yzerman Detroit Red Wings

At the height of his game, Yzerman could fill the net and is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in hockey history. Three Stanley Cups, 1755 career points in 1541 regular season games and 185 points in 196 playoff games. If Yzerman isn’t the best player of the dead Cup era, he’s for sure in the top ten.

As for the jersey, I personally think that the Red Wings have the best look of any of the Original Six teams. Fun fact: Detroit and Toronto are the only teams in the NHL with only two main colours on their jerseys (thanks for the fun fact Adam(editor’s note: it was actually Ben, not Adam, who delivered this fact in our NHL jersey fantasy draft podcast episode)). The Red Wings red and white with the wheel logo is a simple, clean look that has been consistent since its inception. The consistency doesn’t make it hard to remember Red Wings greats like Howe, Yzerman and Lidstrom while watching the current-day squad get pummelled.

The Podium

Bronze Medal Jersey
Randy Johnson Arizona Diamondbacks

The Big Unit. Using his 6’10” frame to chuck absolute heat, Johnson is one of the most imposing pitchers in baseball history. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, Johnson is a very cool player to have sewn on the back of a jersey. Of the seven teams The Big Unit pitched for, in terms of owning his jersey, I would put the pinstripe Diamondbacks jersey only behind an Expos jersey and just ahead of a teal Mariners alternate.

Silver Medal Jersey
Jack O’Callahan Miracle on Ice

The Miracle on Ice team is one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history and it inspired the best hockey movie ever in “Miracle”.

OC’s playing baby! It pains me to not pick this jersey as the best submission this week, but the competition was tough this week.

Jersey of the Week
Autographed John Tavares New York Islanders

While the Tavares jersey would look better in blue and white, it’s too nice not to give it some shine with the top ranking. I actually kind of like the Islanders’ jerseys. The blue, white and orange really pops. I just hate Islanders Twitter and their scorned little brother syndrome that ignites every time Tavares and the Maple Leafs have a tough loss.

This is the second autographed jersey that’s been submitted to the blog. As much as I loved the first one submitted, a Tavares autograph gives off a bit more juice than a Jason Arnott. If I was to give a quick power ranking with no research, I would have JT as a top 10 center of the 2010’s and this jersey’s ranking reflects as much.

Jersey of the Week Standings

Adam remains firmly in first place with no signs of slowing down. Drew leapfrogs to second place with the top jersey this week.

Jersey News Round-Up

Another wave of Reverse Retros hitting the Twitter timeline this week. Of the four, the Red St. Louis jersey is by far the sharpest. Like Toronto’s, Winnipeg’s looks much better on the ice than in the offseason photoshoots. I also love the revival Rangers’ Statue of Liberty look. As for the red Vegas, I can take it or leave it. I’m not a fan of any of Vegas’ jerseys to begin with and the red doesn’t change my mind.

That’s a tough look.

Although I just slammed Vegas’ red jersey above, I kind of like how cool their Chinese New Years warm-ups look.

Kind of cool. Will have to see it live.

It’s photoshop time in the MLB offseason calendar. I for one love the look of Springer in a Blue Jays jersey.

Somehow I gotta get Turtle in on one of the jersey blogs.
