The Jersey Round-Up

Brock Badgers Basketball Jersey

Last year the Badger’s mens basketball team was second in the OUA and first in the Western Conference with a record of 21-3 which was good enough to qualify for the USports championship as the seventh seed in Canada. This year’s team is 7-4 and the word on the street is the team looks noticeably worse.

Some would say the difference this year is the fact that face of the program Dani Elgadi graduated to play pro basketball in Germany. Others would point to the fact that unofficial season ticket-holders Adam and I haven’t been to a game since last season. It’s tough to say which is the reason.

Mats Sundin Quebec Nodiques Jersey

Zut alors what a jersey. Pour one out for the Nordiques team that never was. When the Nordiques got bounced to Colorado in 1995, they were the smallest market in the NHL and the second smallest market to Green Bay of the Big 4 Leagues. The unfortunate part is the team was on the upswing and won North East Division with a 30-13-5 record in the lockout shortened 1994-95 season. The following year the Avalanche won the 1996 Cup with this beauty of a roster:

Imagine how much crazier this roster would’ve been had the Nordiques not traded a 22 year-old Mats Sundin for 1 season of Wendel Clark?

Teemu Selanne Winnipeg Jets Jersey

The Finnish Flash. 76 goals and 132 points as rookie. Teemu was a sick sick puppy. While he may have played more seasons as a Duck and won a Cup in Anaheim, Winnipeg is where it all started. While I’m a big fan of the Winnipeg Jets revamped look, their old look is an absolute classic.

Throwback to better days

Aaron Sanchez Toronto Blue Jays Jersey

Troy Tulowitzki Toronto Blue Jays Jersey

It was just over three years ago that the Blue Jays traded for the best shortstop in the game, 22 year-old Aaron Sanchez was throwing bullets from the bullpen and the Blue Jays were the hottest team in baseball heading into the 2013 playoffs.

Here’s my defense of the Tulowitzki purchase: Tulo was my favourite non-Blue Jay before the trade, he had been one of the best shortstops in baseball and the Jays shop at the Rogers Center was sold out of Donaldson, Bautista, and Encarnacion. Right from the get go Tulo has been a let down and now he gets paid a lot of money to chill on the DL. As long as I have money in my bank account I’ll continue to buy bad jerseys.

As for Sanchez, when he doesn’t have blister issues, has shown the ability of an ace. He’s shown some command issues and might traded for prospects that better fit the Blue Jays timeline. But when he’s on, he has one of the best fastball curveball combos out there.

The Jays might be kind of crappy right now but at least we’ve had a few good seasons in the last 2 decades.

Drew Bledsoe Buffalo Bills Black Reebok Jersey

“The guy before Brady”. The four-time Pro Bowler has become a footnote in the story of the Bellichick era. If he didn’t have a net worth estimated at $48 million I’d actually feel bad that Bledsoe got cucked by Tom Brady.

This gem of a jersey screams early 2000’s. While I love the Bufflo Bills colour scheme and would puke if this were their current jerseys, ugly throwbacks always play. This is some very nice tailgate attire.

Boston Bruins Classic Dark and 1995/96 – 2005/06 Alternate Bear Jerseys

As much as I hate the Bruins I also hate how much I like their jerseys. The jersey on the left was their main jersey in the 80’s up until 95. This jersey was worn by legends like Ray Bourque, Cam Neely and Happy Gilmore.

As for the Pooh Bear Jersey, as I’ve said above, ugly throwback jerseys always play. I’d rock a Jumbo Joe Thornton Pooh Bear jersey in a heart beat. Bruins hate aside they have some clean looks.

Jersey Dump

Drake doesn’t wear nobodies. This bodes well for RJ “the real Maple Jordan” Barrett.

Very cool.

Nike>Under Armour any day of the week.

#freeBortles

I kind of want a Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead jersey now.

Didn’t realize Jrue had two brothers.

Jersey Round-Up

Adidas Newcastle Home Kit

Quite honestly hats off to me for the execution on this one. For the life of me I had no idea what soccer… correction football… team this was. I had to fire up Google to make head or tails of this nonsense. Notice the correct British use of the word “kit”. Who is this cultured aficionado? Supposedly people wake up early to watch Premier League on weekends. Could’t be me

In terms of jerseys it kind of looks like a stereotypical referee shirt. Here’s a little tip to those not in tune with the beautiful game: Premier league referees wear solid coloured shirts. And that’s me talking soccer.

Bruce Smith Buffalo Bills Champion Jersey

Now back to some real football. Bruce Smith is a real one. Hall of Fame defensive end, one of the stars on Buffalo’s back-to-back-to-back-to-back Super Bowl runner-up teams from the 90’s and the NFL’s all-time leader in quarter back sacks with 200.

Now from the looks of it, I’m going to say this is probably a thrift shop pick-up. In my mind the best kind of Bills jersey is a cheap Bills jersey. If you’re going to a member of the mafia you can’t be afraid of your authentic Lesean McCoy jersey getting barbeque sauce and beer poured on it. With a jersey like this you can jump through flaming tables to your hearts desire and look fresh while doing so.

Raptors Staring Big Men 2012-2015 Jonas Valanciunas and Amir Johnson

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. It’s a shame that the NBA is going small and these two are literal dinosaurs. Back in my day you had didn’t worry about your power forward’s “switchability” you were looking for rebounds, shot blocking and some sweet post work.

This era of Raptors jersey might be the least aesthetically pleasing but they’re the ones that I grew up with so I’ll always go to bat for them. At the time they came out I remember people were pumped because at the time the purple look wasn’t that popular. But like a fine wine the purple Raptors throwback is what the people want.

Vladamir Guerrero Jr. Toronto Blue Jays Home Jersey

Getting a prospect’s jersey is always a risky proposition… But this is a slam dunk. The road to the Blue Jays having a legit blue chip prospect pan out is littered with Travis Sniders and Kyle Drabeks.

Peter Stastny Quebec Nordique Jersey

I love the old Nordique jerseys. The logo has a classic clean look, the fleure de lis hasn’t really been utilized in too many hockey jerseys since, and there have been some straight up studs to suit up for Quebec. Stastny is low key one of the all-time greats. Get a load of this:

Screen Shot 2018-11-29 at 7.18.42 PM.png

If Stastny had a few more elite years he would no doubt be in the NHL pantheon but at the very least (based on no fact-checking on my part) he’s a top 5 Euro of all-time.

Mississauga Ice Dogs Jersey

Shout out to the team that Cherry built. Before they moved to Niagara and Cherry sold his shares in the team, the Ice Dogs were truly a tire fire. From its first season in 1997 to when they relocated to Niagara in 2007, the team had a record of 184-354-47. They actually has a bunch of notable NHL alumni:

  • Daniel Carcillo
  • Greg Jacina
  • Brian McGrattan
  • Sean McMorrow
  • Patrick O’Sullivan
  • Kyle Quincey
  • Igor Radulov
  • Rob Schremp
  • Jason Spezza
  • Chad Wiseman
  • Cody Bass
  • Luca Caputi
  • Dustin Jeffrey
  • Alex Pietrangelo
  • Oskar Osala

This jersey is so cool because I’d imagine that there are just so few around anymore. I love jerseys that sit in the middle of the obscure and kind of ugly section of the Venn diagram. Give ugly jerseys a couple of years and they become cool. That’s just how it is.

Jersey Dump

I’m here for this.

Call me when I can get a Johnny Manziel Arizona Hot Shot Jersey.

I’m all for the Bills upgrading these to their primary jerseys.

It’d be cool to scoop up a Selanne throwback. Maybe a Shane Doan or Keith Tkachuk.

Bring back Colour Rush Thursdays. The worst Colour Rush jersey is still beautiful in my eyes.

Where’s Josh Allen?

This is too well put together. The old viral taped up Browns QB jersy was the epitome of Cleveland football.

As a hater of Kyrie and the Patriots this jersey nauseates me to my core.

Rookie quarterbacks shine in Week 3

We’re just three weeks into the season and some big storylines are already starting to unfold. Rookie quarterbacks are already starting to make an impact on their teams. First, in Week 1 it was Sam Darnold winning his first career start. In Week 3, Baker Mayfield saw his first real taste of NFL action on Thursday night when he entered the game for the Browns. After Tyrod Taylor got off to a slow start, Hue Jackson decided to make the quarterback switch and it paid off big time. Mayfield finished the game with 201 yards on 17 of 23 attempts, and although he didn’t throw for a touchdown, he still (technically) found a way to get into the endzone.

The Titans had Another Music City Miracle

Wild Card Weekend in the NFL was exactly as the name suggests: wild. It started with Kansas City vs Tennessee in a game that many people were expecting the Chiefs to win easily. After building a 21-3 lead, it looked like Kansas City was running away with the game heading into halftime. But right at the end of the 2nd quarter, the Chiefs lost one of their top playmakers in Travis Kelce after a big hit.

The Playoff Drought is Over in Buffalo

It took until the very end of Week 17, but the playoff picture is finally set. While many of the usual favourites found their way back into the postseason, a few teams are in the playoffs for the first time in a while. Most notably, the Buffalo Bills have finally ended their 17 year playoff drought, but while the playoff drought in Buffalo was the longest, it wasn’t the only drought snapped this season.

Can the Eagles Win Without Wentz?

Week 14 was full of exciting games, so let’s get into it. There was a lot to talk about, but here are some of the big stories of the week.

Two of the NFC’s top teams met over the weekend in a matchup that could have some impact over final seeding come playoff time. The Rams played host to the Eagles, and the two highest scoring teams in the NFL did not disappoint. For a while it looked like the Eagles were going to run away with it, as Wentz threw 3 touchdown passes in the half and built a 24-14 lead. Wentz got the Eagles on the board once again, throwing a touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffrey late in the third quarter, but it was a play that happened just before that has everybody talking.

The Eagles managed to hold on and won the game 43-35, and have officially locked up the top spot in the NFC East, but lost their star quarterback in the process. Read more

The Nathan Peterman Experiment Went Worse Than Anybody Could Have Imagined

After taking a look at the NFC playoff picture last week, it’s time to take a look at what’s been going on in the AFC.

One of the biggest stories coming out of Week 11 has been the quarterback controversy in Buffalo. After Tyrod Taylor completed 50% of his passes for 56 yards along with an interception in their Week 10 blowout loss against the Saints, Bills coach Sean McDermott decided to make the switch to rookie Nathan Peterman. Kind of a weird move when you’re in the middle of a playoff race. In the second half of that game against the Saints, Peterman stepped in and threw for 79 yards and a touchdown, giving the Bills apparently all they evidence they needed to make the switch heading into their game against the Chargers. It was a strange decision for McDermott to change his mind from saying Taylor is still their starter on Monday, to announcing Peterman as the starter just a day later. But it didn’t take long for everyone to realize that it was a mistake to make this switch.
